Comprehensive Dental Services in Oro Valley, AZ
Visiting your dentist in Oro Valley should not be a stressful experience but rather an important part of your healthcare routine. Dr. Yu has carefully pieced together an exam visit designed to assist with early diagnosis whilst making you feel comfortable and relaxed. This balance leads to our patients actually enjoying their regular check-ups at SmileMore Dental.
During your dental exam appointment, our team will take some time to get to know you and discern your wants and needs. This allows us to customize your experience and focus on your main concern (if any).
As a SPEAR educated dentist, Dr. Yu uses this exam to check the esthetics, function, structure, and biology of your mouth, neck, and jaw. He packs the following into your visit:
- Review of medical and dental health
- Charting of teeth and gum tissue
- Oral cancer and blood pressure screening
- TMJ evaluation
- Digital photos and x-rays (as required)
We make use of modern technology during these exams. One helpful tool is our intraoral camera, which allows us to take you on a live tour of your mouth using a pen-sized camera.
After your exam, Dr. Yu discusses his findings, reviews your x-rays, and develops a custom-made treatment plan for you.
We have a team of dental hygienists who work side-by-side with Dr. Yu to assess and care for your teeth and gum health. During a typical hygiene visit, our experienced team gently examines your teeth and gums for any signs of plaque build-up or decay. On most occasions, we recommend a professional cleaning to care for any areas that may have been missed during your daily brushing and flossing. This cleaning consists of our hygienist using modern technology to clean and polish your teeth.
This appointment also affords us the opportunity to assess the health of your gums. We carry out simple checks to catch any early signs of periodontal (gum) disease.
Our dental hygienists provide helpful advice and insight into how to improve your oral health through proper brushing and flossing. We’ll highlight any problem areas and explain how you can prevent them from becoming dental issues. You, of course, can use this time to ask any questions and highlight any specific issues you may have.
Your gums are the foundation of oral health and can actually boost your overall health too. Studies have shown that gum or periodontal disease has been linked to heart problems, diabetes, and other health conditions. At SmileMore Dental, we understand the importance of healthy gums, so we provide first-class periodontal exams and therapy.
Your exam is traditionally part of an oral hygiene visit and involves our dental hygienist checking for any early signs of disease. Common early symptoms include gums that are:
In addition, we’ll check and remove any plaque build-up along the gum line and highlight any areas that need more attention when brushing. If there are some signs of disease, a series of professional cleanings should help. We may also use laser dentistry to sterilize the area below the gum line and promote gum re-attachment. These lasers allow for more accuracy, faster recovery, and a gentler treatment.
If periodontal disease is not treated then it can lead to more serious issues. If the disease is more advanced, Dr. Yu may recommend scaling and root planing. This is a deep clean that goes below the gum line to clean out any infected tissue.
It is very important to diagnose and treat periodontal disease early as it can eventually lead to tooth loss, receding gums, and even whole health problems.
As with any kind of cancer early diagnosis is key! It greatly enhances survival rates, which is why Dr. Yu includes an annual screening during your regular comprehensive exams. The process is simple and pain-free but the outcome could save your life!
Checking for oral cancer involves Dr. Yu taking a look around your mouth for any abnormalities such as red or white patches on your gums, lesions, bumps, or raised areas. He uses his advanced training to assess these and can test them to see if they are cancerous.
You can also monitor your own health at home by checking for anything suspicious and alerting us. We have the expertise to help so please don’t delay – get checked!
Protecting your teeth is essential when playing sports or even when sleeping at night. Dr. Yu offers two-types of custom mouthguards that are designed to fit your unique bite and feel comfortable.
Many people suffer from bruxism or teeth grinding when they are asleep. Over time grinding can actually wear your teeth leading to a whole host of dental problems. With a SmileMore night guard, your teeth a protected and the act of grinding is discouraged. The guard is worn at night, is non-intrusive, and is designed for a comfortable fit.
The American Dental Association recommends wearing a mouth guard during any sporting activity. Why? Because they work! Sports guards have prevented millions of potential dental injuries and additional costs. Dr. Yu has a range of mouthguards designed to fit any smile and fully protect your teeth from trauma. The sports guards are to be worn during sports only.
Both my wife and I have been blown away by how amazing and wonderful Dr. Yu’s office is and we actually look forward to returning to SmileMore Dental in six months for our next cleaning. Thank you, Dr. Yu, for turning what used to be an undesirable necessity into a pleasant experience.
